First Steps in Family and Infant Neurodevelopmental Education (FINE)
Program
FINE stands for, Family and Infant Neurodevelopmental Education. FINE is the only programme that gives neonatal professionals of all disciplines opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in steps that can be paced to their career needs, from orientation for beginners, to developing competent practice or leadership.
FINE programs assist to bridge the gap between theory and practice with a range of learning opportunities that can be adapted to different settings. We have universal appeal with activity in over 20 countries and translations into 12 languages.
First Steps is a 100% online program created to introduce the key principles of FINE and infant and family centred developmental care.
Who should do this training?
First Steps is an online program developed by health professionals who are experts in individualised developmental care for health professionals working in the neonatal setting. It is suitable for:
- Hospital Doctors: Interns, Resident Medical Officers, Career Medical Officers, Registrars Fellows and Neonatologists.
- Nurses: Newly employed Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses. Clinical Nurse Consultants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Educators and Nurse Managers.
- Midwives: working in or working across the neonatal unit.
- Health professionals: Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Dieticians, Pharmacists, and any other allied health professional working in the neonatal unit.
- Students: Medical, Nursing, and Allied health students.
What you will learn
The program is divided into three principles which take approximately 1 hour to complete.
The program consists of self-assessment activities, information, videos, and interactive activities, structured across three key principles:
- Sensitive care protects neurodevelopment
- Parent engagement improves developmental outcomes
- Every baby should be treated as an individual
Course Fee
The First Steps Family and Infant Neurodevelopmental Education Program is currently priced at $109 (reduced for a limited time from $149). Once enrolled the course will be accessible for 30 days to allow for completion.
You may be eligible for a discount to complete the program, discount codes must be obtained prior to purchase and retrospective refunds will not be issued.
Discounts are available to:
- Members of the Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN), The Australian College of Neonatal Nurses (ACNN) and the Neonatal Nurses College of Aotearoa receive a 10% discount code to complete the program. Please contact your college for the discount code.

On successful completion
On successful completion of the course you will receive a digital certificate of attendance endorsed by the FINE Partnership which is recognised around the world.
