Educating Students with an Acquired Brain Injury is a practical online course designed for teachers, counsellors, and learning support staff working with students who have experienced an acquired brain injury (ABI).

The course is made up of 8 modules, with around 6–7 hours of content that you can complete at your own pace. Once enrolled, you’ll have 3 months’ access to the material, giving you flexibility to fit learning around your schedule.

You’ll gain an understanding of what an ABI is and how it can affect a child’s learning, behaviour, and participation at school. The program combines expert knowledge with real stories from patients and families, helping you connect theory with lived experience.

You’ll explore:

  • The cognitive, physical, and behavioural impacts of ABI in the classroom
  • Practical strategies and adjustments to support learning
  • Case examples that bring scenarios to life across both primary and high school contexts

Developed by the highly experienced rehabilitation teams at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network – Rehab2Kids (Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick) and Kids Rehab (The Children’s Hospital at Westmead) – the course features:

  • Pre-recorded lectures tailored for primary and high school educators
  • Interactive quizzes and downloadable resources
  • Opportunities to provide feedback and reflect on your learning

The cost for the course is $150 per person, with access to the course content for a 3 month period. If there are multiple teachers at one school wishing to participate please contact as a discount can be arranged.

Introduction to Brain Injury Rehabilitation

This module provides an overview of paediatric brain injury services across NSW and introduces the multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams who support children and families throughout their recovery. You will also hear about the hospital journey of one of our inpatients, offering insight into the real-life experience of brain injury rehabilitation. Estimated time to complete: 30 minutes

Acquired Brain Injury

Presented by a Medical Doctor, this module outlines the incidence, causes, and common effects of childhood acquired brain injury. It provides foundational knowledge essential for understanding the broader context of rehabilitation and classroom support. Estimated time to complete: 40 minutes

Impact of Brain Injury: Physical and Functional

Presented by an Occupational Therapist and a Physiotherapist, this module explores how brain injury can impact a student’s physical and functional abilities. It includes strategies to support participation in physical activities and everyday school routines. Estimated time to complete: 45 minutes (Primary School) or 75 minutes (High School)

Impact of Brain Injury: Cognition

Presented by a Clinical Neuropsychologist, this module focuses on the cognitive challenges that may arise following a brain injury, particularly in relation to classroom learning, attention, memory, and problem-solving. Estimated time to complete: 70 minutes (Primary School) or 65 minutes (High School)

Impact of Brain Injury: Language and Communication

Presented by a Speech Pathologist, this module helps educators recognise how students with brain injury may experience challenges in verbal and written communication, comprehension, and classroom participation. It offers practical strategies you can apply in your classroom to support students facing these communication difficulties. Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes (Primary School) or 80 minutes (High School)

Impact of Brain Injury: Emotional and Behavioural

Presented by a Clinical Psychologist, this module addresses the emotional and behavioural impacts of acquired brain injury and provides practical insights into supporting students in managing these challenges within the school environment. Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes (Primary School) or 65 minutes (High School)

Impact of Brain Injury: Lived Experience

In this module, you will hear directly from students and parents about their personal experiences navigating school life after an acquired brain injury. These powerful stories offer valuable perspectives on what support looks like in practice. Estimated time to complete: 35 minutes .

Evaluation and Contacts

This is the final module of the course. You’ll be invited to complete a short evaluation to share your feedback and reflections on the learning experience. Your input is highly valued and will help guide future improvements. You’ll also find contact details for the Brain Injury Rehabilitation teams, should you wish to access further support or information for your school setting. Estimated time to complete: 15 minutes
